Reno, NV – A powerful windstorm roared through western Nevada and the eastern Sierra on Sunday, producing damaging gusts that exceeded 90 mph in some areas, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
The highest reported gust was 91 mph near Washoe City (5,088 ft), with several other locations recording extreme winds — including 77 mph in South Verdi, 75 mph in South Reno’s Arrowcreek area, and 74 mph in Galena. Carson City also saw gusts near 70 mph by Sunday evening.
Farther south, the Mono County region of California reported multiple gusts between 65 and 89 mph, including 89 mph at Mill Canyon and 85 mph atop Mammoth Mountain’s Chair 1. These high winds created hazardous travel conditions along U.S. 395 and across mountain passes, while also causing downed tree limbs and minor power outages.
Forecasters said the intense winds were driven by a deep upper-level trough moving through the Sierra Nevada. Conditions are expected to ease Monday, though cooler temperatures and lingering breezes will continue into early week.
