Reno, NV – Drivers across Northern Nevada are facing slick and hazardous conditions today as early-morning ice formed on bridges, overpasses, and several higher-elevation roads. The Nevada State Police issued a morning advisory around 6:30 a.m., warning commuters to slow down and prepare for rapidly changing highway conditions.

According to Nevada State Police, multiple stretches of roadway developed unexpected icy patches overnight as temperatures dropped near freezing before sunrise. The agency reported especially slick conditions on elevated surfaces, which typically freeze faster than ground-level roads.

Troopers responded to at least one icy section on a Northern Nevada highway early Tuesday, placing cones and warning lights to slow approaching traffic. While no injuries were immediately reported, officials emphasized that black ice remains difficult to detect until vehicles are already on top of it.

The Nevada Highway Patrol said drivers traveling through mountain passes and rural stretches between Reno, Carson City, and the northern state line should expect variable traction throughout the morning. Motorists are urged to leave extra braking distance, reduce speed on bridges, and watch for emergency vehicles assisting at icy locations.

Forecasters say temperatures will rise gradually through late morning, which may help melt some ice on sun-exposed roadways. However, shaded areas and higher mountain routes could remain slick until mid-day.

Authorities also noted that similar conditions may return overnight if temperatures fall again, creating additional morning hazards for Wednesday’s commute.
