Elko, Nev. – Parts of northern Nevada will sizzle Monday as a heat advisory goes into effect, with valley temperatures expected to top out between 95 and 100 degrees across Elko, Humboldt, and Lander counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Elko, the advisory runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. PDT Monday and covers cities including Elko, Battle Mountain, Spring Creek, and Winnemucca. The hottest conditions are expected in low-lying valleys, where prolonged sun exposure and minimal shade will amplify the heat risk.
Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heat hours, use air conditioning if available, and drink plenty of water. Vulnerable groups—especially the elderly, young children, and outdoor workers—are at elevated risk for heat-related illness.
In Elko and Spring Creek, community cooling centers will be available, and utility companies advise residents to reduce electrical loads during the afternoon to avoid outages. Similar conditions in past years have led to power demand spikes and emergency medical calls.
The heat is expected to ease by Tuesday, but forecasters warn that more advisories may follow if the pattern persists.
