Northern Elko, NV – Drivers in northern Elko County are waking up to hazardous conditions this morning as freezing fog continues to blanket major roadways through 9 a.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service says visibility may drop to one mile or less, affecting commuters on State Route 225 from Adobe Summit to Owyhee and U.S. Highway 93 from Wells north to Jackpot.
According to the National Weather Service, the Freezing Fog Advisory was first issued late Friday night and is expected to remain in effect until mid-morning Saturday. The combination of colder temperatures and dense fog is creating potential slick spots on bridges, open stretches of highway, and elevated terrain near the Owyhee region.
Forecasters say travel impacts will be greatest before sunrise, when moisture from the fog may freeze on untreated surfaces. Reduced visibility could lead to sudden slowdowns, especially for drivers moving through rural, unlit sections of SR-225 and US-93. Road crews are monitoring conditions, but drivers are encouraged to avoid rapid speed changes and to maintain extra space between vehicles.
The Weather Service urges travelers to use low-beam headlights, reduce speed, and plan for additional travel time. Conditions are expected to gradually improve after 9 a.m., though patchy fog may linger in valleys through late morning.
Residents and early-morning commuters in Midas, Jarbidge, Mountain City, Owyhee, and surrounding communities are encouraged to report hazardous spots as visibility fluctuates.
