Reno, Nev. – A Flood Watch is in effect from noon today through late Wednesday evening for much of western Nevada and parts of the eastern Sierra, where heavy rainfall could send creeks out of their banks and overwhelm burn scars.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, excessive runoff may impact the Reno-Carson City-Minden corridor, the Lake Tahoe basin, and areas of Lassen, Plumas, and Mono counties. Recent burn scars, including the Tamarack, Mill, and Dixie fire zones, are at highest risk for dangerous flash flooding.
Communities such as South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Gardnerville, and Susanville may see street flooding, washed-out rural roads, and rapid rises in rivers and creeks. Travelers on U.S. 395 and Highway 50 should be prepared for sudden road closures, rockslides, or hydroplaning in heavier downpours.
Officials urge residents to avoid low-lying areas, never attempt to drive through flooded roads, and keep cell phones and emergency kits charged in case of power outages.
The Flood Watch remains in effect through Wednesday evening, with forecasters warning that Flood Warnings could be issued if rainfall intensifies.
