Reno, NV – A flood watch is in effect for parts of eastern California and western Nevada today as heavy rain and thunderstorms bring a risk of flash flooding through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, the watch remains active until 8 p.m. Thursday for Mono County, CA, along with Mineral and southern Lyon counties in Nevada. Cities in the watch zone include Mammoth Lakes, Bridgeport, Coleville, Yerington, Hawthorne, and Lee Vining.
Forecasters warn that excessive rainfall could trigger flash flooding in creeks, streams, and low-lying urban areas. Burn scars and steep terrain are especially vulnerable to dangerous runoff and mudslides.
The weather service advises residents to stay alert for additional warnings and be prepared to act quickly if conditions worsen. Flood warnings may be issued if storms produce significant downpours.
Travelers in the eastern Sierra and western Nevada should watch for water on roadways and avoid driving through flooded areas. Even shallow water can sweep vehicles away.
