Duluth, Minnesota – Heavy snow and wind gusts up to 50 mph could bring down tree limbs and power lines across central St. Louis County through Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until noon CST Thursday for central St. Louis County, including Hibbing and the Lake Vermilion area. An additional 5 to 10 inches of snow is expected, with 11 to 15 inches possible in higher terrain closer to the North Shore. Strong winds will create blowing snow and drifting, sharply reducing visibility at times.

The weight of accumulating snow combined with gusty winds may lead to sporadic power outages, especially across wooded areas and Tribal Lands of the Bois Forte Band. Roads including U.S. Highway 169 and Highway 37 could become snow-covered and slick, impacting both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.

Officials urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel and check 511mn.org for the latest road conditions. Residents should prepare for possible outages and avoid contact with any downed power lines.

Snow and wind will gradually diminish late Thursday morning, but hazardous travel conditions may linger into the afternoon.
