Duluth, Minnesota – Heavy snow and strengthening winds will surge across northeastern Minnesota beginning Tuesday afternoon, creating treacherous travel from Duluth up the North Shore and inland toward Ely, Hibbing, and Grand Marais. Snow totals between 4 and 11 inches, combined with gusts up to 40 mph, will produce blowing and drifting snow from Tuesday evening through Wednesday night.
According to the National Weather Service Duluth office, the Winter Storm Warning begins at noon Tuesday for Carlton, St. Louis, Lake, and Cook counties. According to meteorologists, snowfall will intensify late Tuesday as colder air deepens. Higher totals are likely along the Arrowhead and inland from Lake Superior, while lower amounts develop right along the shoreline. Blowing snow will reduce visibility on I-35, U.S. 2, MN-61, and rural routes near Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Grand Marais.
Travel will deteriorate quickly Tuesday evening. According to MnDOT, drifting may fill lanes on exposed stretches near Cloquet and along North Shore ridges. Wednesday morning’s commute may be slow or hazardous as snow continues and winds stay elevated. The Boundary Waters and tribal lands, including Fond du Lac, Grand Portage, and Bois Forte areas, will face extended periods of heavy snow.
Residents should delay non-essential trips, charge phones, and carry winter kits with blankets, water, and a flashlight. Expect possible delays for school events and outdoor activities. Keep pets sheltered and clear driveways early before drifts deepen. Prepare for brief power interruptions where heavy, wind-packed snow weighs on lines.
