Duluth, Minnesota – Bitter Arctic cold gripped the Northland early Tuesday, with dangerously low wind chills making outdoor exposure hazardous as another round of light snow moves in later today and tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, wind chills dropped to between 25 and 40 degrees below zero across northeastern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin this morning. Actual air temperatures remain well below zero, and even brief exposure can lead to frostbite in a short period of time. Conditions remain frigid through the day, with highs only reaching near zero to the single digits.

Attention then turns to a fast-moving clipper system expected to arrive this evening and continue into Wednesday. Light snow will develop tonight, mainly along and south of the Iron Range, including Duluth, Hibbing, Virginia, and into northwest Wisconsin. Most locations are expected to see less than one inch of accumulation, though parts of northwest Wisconsin could approach around one inch by early Thursday.

Road conditions may become slick, especially during the overnight and early morning hours. Even light snowfall combined with extreme cold can quickly create icy patches on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and use caution if traveling tonight or Wednesday morning. The extreme cold remains the primary hazard, with additional Arctic air expected to reinforce later this week, keeping dangerous wind chills in place across the Northland.
