Duluth, Minnesota – Patchy frost could return to parts of northern Minnesota early Friday as temperatures dip into the upper 30s, prompting concern for gardeners and outdoor workers in areas like Hibbing, Ely, and Grand Marais.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, lows Thursday night into Friday morning will fall to near 36°F in Ely and 37°F in Hibbing, with temperatures hovering around 39°F in Grand Marais and International Falls. The coldest pockets may briefly drop below the 35°F threshold for frost development, particularly in low-lying and sheltered areas.
The chill won’t last long. Overnight lows are expected to climb steadily heading into the weekend and early next week, with most locations returning to the upper 40s and 50s by Sunday night. Still, residents are advised to cover sensitive plants Thursday evening and take precautions against early frost impacts, especially in agricultural areas.
Frost advisories are not yet active, but could be issued if temperatures trend colder. Another update from the NWS is expected by Thursday afternoon.
