Park Rapids, MN – A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for parts of central Minnesota today, with forecasters calling for 4 to 6 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 35 mph by this evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, the warning covers Wadena, Hubbard, East Becker, and East Otter Tail counties from noon Tuesday through midnight. Snow is expected to intensify this afternoon, making travel hazardous across U.S. Highway 71, State Highway 34, and nearby rural routes.

Road conditions may deteriorate rapidly as falling and blowing snow reduce visibility below a quarter-mile at times. Officials warn the Tuesday evening commute could be particularly difficult, with slick bridges and overpasses likely.

Residents are urged to delay nonessential travel and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency kits, including food, water, and flashlights. Those who must drive are advised to slow down, avoid cruise control, and allow extra time for travel.

Forecasters expect conditions to improve late tonight as snow tapers off, though strong winds and drifting snow may continue to affect open areas into Wednesday morning.

This warning is part of a broader winter system moving across the Upper Midwest, bringing snow and gusty winds from North Dakota into western Minnesota.
