Duluth, MN – Strong southerly winds are sweeping across northern Minnesota and Lake Superior today as a cold front moves through the region, prompting Gale Warnings and Small Craft Advisories from the National Weather Service (NWS) Duluth office.
According to the NWS, hazardous marine conditions will develop this afternoon, with the strongest gusts—approaching 35 to 40 knots—expected near Grand Marais and Grand Portage through early evening. Winds will shift westerly behind the front before diminishing early Monday morning.
On land, residents across the North Shore and Duluth area can expect a warm, gusty Sunday with scattered showers and isolated, non-severe thunderstorms. Highs will reach the upper 70s to near 80 degrees before temperatures fall sharply overnight.
By Monday, cooler air settles in, with highs in the mid-50s and lows dipping into the 30s. Frost is possible Monday night and again Tuesday night, particularly in inland and sheltered areas.
Travelers and boaters on Lake Superior are urged to use caution and stay updated with marine forecasts through the NWS Duluth office.
