Duluth, Minnesota – Drivers across northern Minnesota could face sudden whiteout conditions Friday as fast-moving snow squalls develop and briefly reduce visibility on key roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, snow squalls are possible Friday, with the greatest risk across the Arrowhead and areas near Lake Superior, including Duluth, Grand Marais, and International Falls. These quick bursts of snow can rapidly drop visibility and create slick conditions on highways like I-35 and Highway 61.

Conditions improve heading into the weekend, with dry weather and sunshine expected Saturday and Sunday. Highs will moderate into the 40s, offering a short break from active weather.

A much more complex system arrives early next week. Beginning Monday and continuing through midweek, the region could see a mix of rain, snow, and wintry precipitation, along with the potential for thunderstorms. This system may bring prolonged travel impacts and rapidly changing conditions across northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.

Residents are urged to stay alert for rapidly changing conditions Friday and prepare for a more significant, multi-day weather system early next week, with additional advisories likely.
