Duluth, Minnesota – Isolated severe storms may strike northern Minnesota Friday afternoon, bringing large hail and damaging winds to parts of the state as weekend travel begins.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, scattered thunderstorms are expected throughout Friday, with the strongest activity most likely between the afternoon and early evening. Some of these storms could become severe, producing hail over 1 inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 mph. Areas under marginal risk include Duluth, Hibbing, Grand Rapids, and International Falls.

Although the exact timing remains uncertain, the NWS emphasizes that Friday evening carries the greatest risk. Residents in northern and central Minnesota, especially those traveling along Highway 53 and U.S. Route 2, should stay alert for rapidly changing weather. Localized power outages and downed tree limbs are possible where storms intensify.

Drivers are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts. No tornadoes are expected, but brief heavy rain could cause minor ponding on roads.

Storm activity is forecast to diminish late Friday night, but additional updates may be issued if conditions evolve.
