Duluth, MN – A strong lake-effect snow event dropped up to 9.5 inches across parts of northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin over the weekend, with the heaviest snow falling along the Lake Superior shoreline. The National Weather Service in Duluth said the snow bands developed Saturday and persisted through early Sunday morning before tapering off.
According to preliminary snowfall analysis, Two Harbors and the Twin Ports area received around 7 inches, while higher elevations across the Bayfield Peninsula measured up to 9.5 inches. Other notable totals included 6 inches in Wrenshall, 6.7 inches in Two Harbors, 6.2 inches near Cornucopia, and 7.4 inches southwest of Brainerd.
The lake-effect bands were fueled by cold air passing over the relatively warm waters of Lake Superior, creating narrow but intense snow belts. Areas just inland from the lake saw lighter amounts, generally ranging between 2 and 5 inches.
The National Weather Service noted that additional light snow showers will linger through Sunday evening, but accumulations are expected to remain under 1 inch. Temperatures will stay below freezing into early next week, maintaining slick road conditions—especially in shaded and untreated areas.
