DULUTH, Minn. – Northern Minnesota drivers should prepare for slick roads and reduced visibility Thursday as thunderstorms and gusty winds move in. Rain and falling temperatures could make for dangerous travel, especially along I-35 near Duluth during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, storms are likely between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday with wind gusts topping 30 mph. Showers will continue into Thursday night before clearing Friday morning. Cooler, fall-like air will settle in, bringing the risk of patchy frost Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.

Residents across St. Louis, Cook, Lake, and Carlton counties should secure outdoor items, check sump pumps, and limit non-essential travel during peak rainfall. Power outages are possible if strong winds down trees or power lines. Football games and outdoor events Thursday evening could face delays or cancellations.

By Friday, conditions improve with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 50s, though breezy winds may still impact boaters on Lake Superior. The weekend turns sunnier and milder, but overnight frost remains a concern for gardeners and farmers.

The unsettled pattern continues into early next week, with another round of showers possible Monday. The National Weather Service urges residents to stay alert for updates as additional advisories may be issued.
