Duluth, Minn. – Dangerous heat will grip northern Minnesota this weekend, with temperatures soaring and heat index values climbing to near 99°F across much of the region by Saturday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Heat Advisory is in effect from noon Saturday through 9 p.m. Sunday for counties including St. Louis, Itasca, Cass, Aitkin, Carlton, and Koochiching. Communities such as Duluth, Hibbing, Grand Rapids, Walker, and International Falls could face serious heat stress, especially in the afternoon and early evening hours.

Heat index values between 95 and 99 degrees will challenge both outdoor workers and residents without air conditioning. The advisory also includes Voyageurs National Park, the Boundary Waters, and tribal lands of the Fond du Lac, Bois Forte, and Mille Lacs Bands. Emergency officials urge residents to stay indoors, limit strenuous activities, and check on vulnerable neighbors and elders.

While the region typically avoids prolonged summer heat, this early-season surge could be dangerous—especially for those without cooling options.

The Heat Advisory remains in effect through Sunday evening, with updated warnings possible. Stay tuned to weather.gov/duluth for the latest alerts.
