Duluth, Minn. – Wildfire risk is surging across northern Minnesota today as a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m., driven by strong winds and dangerously dry air.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, sustained east winds of 15 to 25 mph—with gusts up to 40 mph—combined with relative humidity as low as 15% are creating prime conditions for rapid fire spread. The warning covers Koochiching, North St. Louis, Northern Cook and Lake, North Itasca, Central St. Louis, and South Itasca counties.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has urged residents to postpone any outdoor burning, including campfires and debris piles. In parts of eastern St. Louis and Cook counties, a Wind Advisory is also in effect due to intensified gusts. Any fires that start today could quickly become uncontrollable, particularly in forested and grassy areas.

Drivers along Highway 53 and residents in Ely, International Falls, and Grand Rapids should stay alert for potential smoke or fire activity. Residents should avoid open flames, secure flammable materials, and have emergency plans ready.

The Red Flag Warning is expected to expire by 9 p.m., but fire weather conditions could return later this week if dry air persists.
