Duluth, MN – Drivers across northern Minnesota are waking up to dangerous travel conditions Friday morning as a dense fog advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, visibility has dropped to less than one-quarter mile in several counties, including Crow Wing, Aitkin, Cass, Itasca, St. Louis, Cook, and Lake. The advisory also covers tribal lands of the Mille Lacs Band, Grand Portage, and Bois Forte, as well as Voyageurs National Park and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
Meteorologists warn that fog will thicken rapidly after 2 a.m. and linger through the early commute. Drivers in Brainerd, Grand Rapids, Ely, Hibbing, and International Falls are urged to use caution, slow down, and rely on low-beam headlights and fog lights.
The dense fog poses the highest risk for morning commuters, school buses, and rural highways where visibility can change suddenly. Officials stress that drivers should leave extra space between vehicles and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
The advisory is expected to expire at 10 a.m. Friday as visibility improves with daytime heating.
