Gaylord, Michigan – Snow and blowing snow are expected to impact travel across northern Lower Michigan beginning Monday morning, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. Monday until 7 a.m. EST Tuesday for Cheboygan, Crawford, Missaukee, and Roscommon counties.
Forecasters expect widespread snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. In addition to snowfall, considerable blowing and drifting snow is anticipated Monday as winds increase, potentially leading to rapid changes in road conditions.
The National Weather Service warns that slippery roads and periods of sharply reduced visibility could affect both the Monday morning and evening commutes. Whiteout-like conditions may develop briefly in open and rural areas as snow is blown across roadways.
Primary highways and secondary roads may become snow-covered quickly, especially during heavier snow bands. Drivers may encounter sudden drops in visibility, making travel hazardous even where snowfall totals remain modest.
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time, particularly during peak commuting hours. Conditions may vary significantly over short distances due to blowing snow and drifting.
Local road crews are expected to monitor conditions, but travelers should be prepared for rapidly changing visibility and traction throughout the day Monday. Additional updates may be issued if snowfall or wind impacts increase.
