Gaylord, MI – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for much of northern Lower Michigan from Wednesday afternoon through Friday morning, with forecasters warning of heavy snow, strong winds, and whiteout conditions that could disrupt Thanksgiving travel across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, snow will begin Wednesday afternoon and intensify overnight into Thanksgiving Day, with total accumulations of 6 to 12 inches expected. Locally higher amounts are possible, especially in Antrim, Charlevoix, Crawford, and Otsego counties, with additional snow extending into Grand Traverse, Wexford, Roscommon, and Missaukee counties.

Winds could gust up to 45 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow and periods of whiteout visibility. Travel will likely be hazardous to nearly impossible at times along US-131, M-32, and I-75.

Forecasters caution that the storm could have a major impact on Thanksgiving travel, both Wednesday night and Thursday morning, as families head north or west toward Traverse City, Gaylord, and Petoskey.

Residents and travelers are urged to monitor forecast updates, delay travel if possible, and keep emergency kits—including blankets, food, and water—in their vehicles.

Snow is expected to continue through Friday morning, with blowing snow likely even after accumulations taper off.
