Gaylord, Michigan – Heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions are expected across parts of northern Lower Michigan beginning Sunday evening, as the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning through early Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. EST Tuesday for Otsego, Emmet, Kalkaska, and Wexford counties.

Forecasters expect total snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches, with locally higher amounts possible, especially where persistent snow bands develop. In addition to snowfall, gusty winds up to 40 mph are expected Monday, leading to considerable blowing and drifting snow.

The National Weather Service warns that whiteout conditions may develop at times Monday, significantly reducing visibility and making travel treacherous or very difficult. Roads are expected to become snow-covered quickly, even after treatment, particularly on open and rural highways.

Hazardous conditions are likely to impact both the Monday morning and evening commutes, with drifting snow continuing after periods of steady snowfall. Bridges, overpasses, and exposed roadways are especially vulnerable to rapid snow accumulation.

Communities affected include Gaylord, Petoskey, Charlevoix-area roadways, Kalkaska, and Cadillac, along with surrounding rural areas. Conditions may vary significantly over short distances as snow bands shift.

Officials advise motorists to avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm. Those who must drive should carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, water, and warm clothing, in case of delays or becoming stranded.

Additional updates or extensions are possible as the storm evolves.
