Traverse City, Michigan – Northern Michigan is expected to see a fairly typical mid-January winter pattern next week, with periodic snow chances and brief lake-effect bursts but no strong signal for unusually heavy or persistent snowfall from Sunday through Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, northern Michigan is forecast to remain in a near-normal precipitation zone during the January 12–16 period. Temperatures are expected to run above seasonal averages at times, which could limit prolonged lake-effect events while still allowing for quick-hitting snow showers.

Communities across the Tip of the Mitt, including Traverse City, Petoskey, and Charlevoix, may see light accumulations on and off through the week, especially when northwest winds align with Lake Michigan. Eastern Upper Peninsula locations such as Sault Ste. Marie could also see intermittent snow, though totals are expected to stay close to seasonal norms. Roads including U.S. 31, U.S. 131, and M-72 may become slick during early morning or evening hours.

The Michigan Department of Transportation typically advises drivers to remain cautious during variable winter conditions, as brief snow squalls can quickly reduce visibility. Residents should allow extra travel time and be prepared for changing conditions.

The overall pattern looks steady through late week, though localized advisories remain possible with passing systems. Travelers across northern Michigan should continue monitoring updates through Friday.
