Gaylord, Mich. – Triple-digit heat index values are expected across parts of northeast Michigan today, prompting an urgent Heat Advisory for Arenac, Gladwin, and Iosco counties through 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the advisory begins at 11 a.m. Thursday, with heat index values climbing to 102°F. The high temperatures and humidity levels may lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable groups like seniors, outdoor workers, and children.

Communities including East Tawas, Standish, and Gladwin are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours. Those without air conditioning should seek out cooling centers or public libraries, and neighbors are encouraged to check on one another throughout the day.

If you’re heading outdoors, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and drink water frequently. The NWS recommends avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day and watching for symptoms of heat exhaustion—such as dizziness, headache, and nausea—or heat stroke, which requires immediate medical attention.

This is the first major heat advisory for the area this summer. With temperatures not expected to ease until evening, further updates are possible later today.
