Gaylord, Michigan – Travel across northern Michigan is becoming increasingly dangerous Monday as heavy snow bands move through the Gaylord area, producing near-whiteout conditions and rapidly deteriorating roads. Snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour, combined with strong winds, are making travel hazardous on open highways and rural routes.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, winds gusting between 30 and 45 mph are blowing and drifting snow across the region, especially in exposed areas. Wind chills are expected to fall between 10 and 25 degrees below zero later today and continue through Tuesday morning, increasing the risk of frostbite and making any roadside breakdowns life-threatening. Officials warn that extreme cold is also reducing the effectiveness of road salt and treatments.

Key roadways including I-75, U.S. 27, and M-32 are seeing rapidly changing conditions as lake-effect snow lingers. Michigan State Police and MDOT crews are urging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, reduce speed, and be prepared for sudden whiteouts. Those who must travel should carry winter survival supplies, keep phones charged, and allow extra time.

The heaviest snow gradually shifts east tonight, but hazardous travel remains possible into Tuesday as bitter cold and lake-effect snow continue. Additional advisories may remain in effect as conditions evolve.
