Traverse City, Mich. – Northern Michigan will see a mix of sunshine, showers, and increasing storm chances through the weekend, with dangerous beach conditions expected on both Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, Friday will bring decreasing clouds with highs in the 60s and low 70s. Waves will build to 2–3 feet on Lake Huron and up to 2 feet on Lake Michigan, creating a moderate swim risk. Conditions worsen Saturday, when showers develop west of I-75 and waves on Lake Huron climb to 3–5 feet, pushing the swim risk to high. Officials warn swimmers to stay out of the water.
By Sunday, thunderstorms are likely across the region, with highs near 70 to 79 degrees. Both lakes will see 2–3 foot waves, creating moderate swim hazards. The weather service reminds visitors to avoid piers and follow “flip, float, and follow” safety rules if caught in rip currents.
Rain chances continue into Monday, keeping travel and outdoor plans unsettled. Additional advisories could be issued if storms intensify.
