Gaylord, MI – The National Weather Service in Gaylord reports that lake effect snow is ramping up this afternoon across northern Michigan, with the heaviest snow bands expected to develop late tonight and continue into Thursday morning.
Several inches of snow are forecast across northwest Lower Michigan and eastern Upper Michigan, with localized totals of 6 to 8 inches or more possible in the most persistent bands. Areas near Petoskey, Gaylord, Rogers City, and Sault Ste. Marie are among those most likely to experience the highest accumulations.
Forecasters warn that reduced visibility, patchy blowing snow, and hazardous travel conditions will accompany the heaviest snow, particularly during the Thursday morning commute. Roads could become snow-covered and slippery, and travel may be slow or difficult in the hardest-hit zones.
The heaviest snow showers are expected from late Wednesday evening through Thursday morning, gradually tapering by midday Thursday as winds shift and the lake effect bands weaken.
Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, slow down, and check road conditions before heading out. Even short bursts of heavy snow can quickly reduce visibility and make roads treacherous.
Motorists can monitor travel and weather updates through the Michigan Department of Transportation and the latest NWS alerts at weather.gov/apx or on social media at @NWSGaylord.
