Gaylord, Michigan – Holiday travel across northern Michigan could turn hazardous starting tonight as a messy winter system spreads snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the region through Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the greatest snowfall is expected in eastern Upper Michigan, where snow develops this evening and continues into Friday. Snow totals of 6 to 8 inches are likely, with locally higher amounts possible in heavier bands. Roads across Chippewa and Mackinac counties, including stretches near St. Ignace and Drummond Island, may become snow-covered quickly overnight.

Across northern Lower Michigan, including Gaylord, Grayling, Rogers City, Mio, and Alpena, a wintry mix is expected to dominate. Periods of snow and sleet tonight are expected to transition to freezing drizzle and freezing rain on Friday. Ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch are possible, especially south of Grand Traverse Bay, increasing the risk of slick roads and reduced visibility.

Travel impacts are expected to peak overnight and continue through much of Friday, particularly during the morning and midday hours. Areas near Traverse City, Petoskey, and Cadillac may see rapidly changing road conditions as precipitation types shift.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. If possible, delay non-essential travel until conditions improve late Friday. Additional advisories may be issued as the system moves through, and hazardous road conditions could linger even after precipitation tapers.
