Gaylord, MI – A brief but impactful round of mixed precipitation could create slick roads overnight, especially across northern lower Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula before the Friday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a system arriving late tonight will bring a mix of rain and snow, with light freezing rain possible overnight as temperatures dip into the 20s. This could lead to a thin glaze of ice on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses before temperatures rise above freezing after sunrise Friday.
In Gaylord, Petoskey, and Alpena, roads may become slippery between midnight and 7 a.m. Friday, while areas in the eastern U.P., including Sault Ste. Marie, face a higher risk of light icing before conditions improve mid-morning.
Thursday will see clearing skies from north to south, with highs ranging from the mid-30s to mid-40s. Friday warms into the upper 40s, helping melt any early ice and improving travel conditions.
Additional rounds of rain and snow are expected late Saturday into Sunday, potentially bringing more travel impacts across the region.
Drivers should plan for variable conditions overnight and early Friday, slow down on untreated surfaces, and allow extra travel time. Further advisories may be issued as the next system approaches.
