Gaylord, Michigan – Torrential rain and powerful thunderstorms swept across northern Michigan Wednesday evening, prompting a Flood Watch for 12 counties that remains in effect through Thursday morning. Residents from Kalkaska to Manistee are urged to stay alert as local roads and low-lying neighborhoods face rising flood risks overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, already saturated ground in Alcona, Arenac, Crawford, Gladwin, Iosco, Kalkaska, Manistee, Missaukee, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Roscommon, and Wexford counties could see another 2 to 4 inches of rain before dawn. Emergency officials warn that excessive runoff may quickly overwhelm drainage systems, particularly in urban areas, flood-prone roadways, and underpasses.

Cities including Tawas City, Cadillac, Grayling, Harrisville, Lake City, Standish, Houghton Lake, and West Branch could see temporary road closures or waterlogged intersections. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through standing water and keep extra distance from other vehicles, especially overnight when flooding is harder to spot. Residents should prepare for potential basement flooding, have charging devices ready, and move valuables to higher ground if needed.

Flood risks may linger through Thursday morning, and additional flood warnings or advisories are possible. Stay tuned to local alerts and be ready to act if conditions worsen.
