Gaylord, MI – A strong storm system is forecast to bring moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds to northern Michigan from Saturday night through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Gaylord.
Forecasters say showers and thunderstorms will develop Friday night and gradually move east through Saturday. A stronger round of rain and storms is expected to arrive Saturday evening, continuing overnight into Sunday morning.
According to the NWS, much of northern Michigan — including Traverse City, Alpena, Petoskey, and Gaylord — faces a medium to high potential (40–70%+) for over 1.5 inches of rain, with localized totals above 2 inches possible. Winds could also gust over 30 mph, especially near the lakeshore.
Forecasters caution that heavy rain may lead to ponding on roads and minor flooding in low-lying areas. Residents are urged to monitor updates as the system approaches and to prepare for slower travel and potential visibility issues during heavier downpours.
The heaviest rainfall and strongest winds are expected late Saturday night into early Sunday, with conditions improving by Sunday evening.
