Gaylord, MI – Drivers across northern Lower Michigan and parts of eastern Upper Michigan should prepare for hazardous travel conditions tonight through Friday as a sharp cold front brings rapidly falling temperatures, snow showers, and strong winds.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, temperatures are expected to drop 10 to 20 degrees this evening, causing a flash freeze of wet roads left behind by earlier rain. As colder air moves in, rain will transition to snow showers, with the most persistent snow expected overnight into Friday.

Forecasters say localized snowfall totals up to 6 inches are possible, especially in snowbelt areas of northern Lower Michigan and portions of eastern Upper Michigan. Snow may start off wet, then become lighter and more prone to blowing and drifting as winds strengthen.

Winds are expected to gust between 35 and 45 mph late tonight into Friday, leading to quick drops in visibility during heavier snow showers. Officials warn that even brief bursts of snow could quickly change road conditions.

The most dangerous travel period is expected this evening through the Friday morning commute, when refreezing roads, snow-covered surfaces, and blowing snow combine. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are especially likely to become slick.

By Friday, temperatures will remain cold, with wind chills falling into the single digits in some areas. While snow showers may gradually taper during the day, light lake-effect snow could linger.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel overnight, slow down if driving, and allow extra stopping distance. Motorists should also be prepared for sudden changes in visibility and road conditions.
