GAYLORD, Mich. – Northern Michigan residents should brace for strong storms this evening, with the greatest threat stretching from Alpena to Gaylord and east toward Tawas City. Damaging winds, large hail, lightning, and locally heavy rainfall are possible between 2 and 10 p.m., prompting residents to review safety plans.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, isolated to scattered storms will continue through tonight, with the most intense activity likely in northeast Lower Michigan and parts of the eastern Upper Peninsula. A couple of storms could produce hail over one inch in diameter, capable of damaging vehicles, roofs, and siding.

Motorists on U.S. 23, I-75, and M-32 should be alert for sudden downpours reducing visibility. Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas, and lightning will pose a hazard for those outdoors. Residents are urged to stay indoors during storms and secure outdoor items that could be blown by high winds.

The storm threat is expected to diminish after 10 p.m., but additional weather alerts may be issued if conditions worsen.
