Gaylord, Mich. – Northern Michigan residents should prepare for a busy weather day Monday as wildfire smoke returns, dangerous swimming conditions develop along parts of the Lake Michigan shoreline and strong to severe thunderstorms threaten the region Monday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, scattered severe thunderstorms may develop between 8 p.m. Monday and 4 a.m. Tuesday as a storm system moves east from Wisconsin. While there is still uncertainty regarding exactly where the strongest storms will track, forecasters say conditions are favorable for severe weather across much of northern Lower Michigan.
The region is under a Level 2 of 5 (Slight Risk) for severe thunderstorms. The primary hazards include damaging wind gusts, large hail, localized flooding and isolated tornadoes. Communities including Gaylord, Petoskey, Traverse City, Cadillac, Alpena, Cheboygan, Rogers City and Mio should monitor forecast updates throughout the day as storm timing and intensity become clearer.
In addition to the storm threat, wildfire smoke is expected to return, creating hazy skies and potentially reducing air quality in some areas. High swim risks are also likely along portions of the Great Lakes shoreline, where dangerous currents could make entering the water life-threatening.
Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings before going to bed Monday night, secure loose outdoor items and review severe weather safety plans. Those visiting area beaches should stay out of the water where high swim risk statements are posted.
Forecast confidence on the exact storm track will improve Monday, and additional severe thunderstorm or tornado watches and warnings could be issued as storms approach northern Michigan.
