Gaylord, Michigan – Drivers along M-55 in northern Michigan may encounter isolated showers and hazy skies today as wildfire smoke drifts over the region, keeping temperatures in the lower 70s to near 80 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a passing weather system will bring the chance of a spot shower mainly along and south of M-55, but most of the region will see partly to mostly cloudy skies. Haze from Canadian wildfires will continue to reduce visibility and air quality through the day, especially in counties south of US-131 and near Cadillac and Houghton Lake.
While road conditions remain mostly dry outside of brief showers, those with respiratory concerns should limit outdoor activities due to elevated smoke levels. Local health officials recommend using air purifiers indoors and avoiding strenuous work outside until skies clear.
Sunshine and comfortable summer temperatures are set to return by Thursday and Friday, bringing relief from the smoky haze. The upcoming weekend looks seasonable with highs in the upper 70s and mostly sunny skies, but more wildfire smoke could drift in depending on wind direction.
Another update is expected this evening as air quality advisories remain possible for parts of northern Michigan.
