Traverse City, MI – Beachgoers across Northern Michigan are being urged to stay out of the water today as powerful waves and rip currents create life-threatening conditions along most Lake Michigan beaches and the Lake Huron shoreline in Chippewa County.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, waves between 3 and 6 feet are expected through this evening, driven by strong winds and unstable lake conditions. A high swim risk is in effect, excluding Grand Traverse Bay, but impacting areas from Ludington to Mackinaw City and Sault Ste. Marie. Authorities warn swimmers not to enter the water, as rip currents may become deadly in seconds.
Temperatures are running unseasonably cool, ranging from the mid-50s to upper 50s today, with numerous showers expected throughout the day. The risk is compounded by reduced visibility and slippery beach conditions, particularly near piers. Beach safety officials urge visitors to avoid the water, wear life jackets near shorelines, and stay clear of structures where currents can be most dangerous.
Conditions should gradually improve Sunday, but beach warnings remain in effect through tonight and could extend if winds persist.
