Alpena, MI – Up to 5 inches of snow are forecast to blanket parts of northeast Michigan by early Monday, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory and raising concerns for the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the advisory will be in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday for Alpena, Alcona, Iosco, Southeast Chippewa, and Eastern Mackinac Counties. The heaviest snowfall is expected around midnight, with quick accumulations of wet, dense snow anticipated.

Travelers across the region should plan for slick roads and reduced visibility, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and less-treated rural highways. Officials warn that road conditions may deteriorate quickly during the overnight hours and could remain hazardous into the Monday morning rush.

Communities along the Lake Huron shoreline and US-23 corridor are especially at risk for travel delays. While March snow isn’t rare, this system’s intensity and timing could bring above-average impacts for this time of year.

Drivers are urged to reduce speed, allow extra travel time, and check road conditions before heading out. Updates will be provided as the system progresses.
