Gaylord, Michigan – A strong storm system is expected to bring accumulating snow and freezing rain to northern Michigan late Tuesday into Wednesday, creating hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, moderate potential exists for 4 inches or more of snow across eastern Upper Michigan and parts of northern Lower Michigan. Higher terrain locations face the greatest risk for heavier snowfall totals.
Forecasters also warn of moderate potential for at least one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulation across portions of northern Lower Michigan, particularly south of the Straits. The combination of snow and freezing rain could lead to slick roads and reduced visibility.
The system is forecast to arrive Tuesday night, with the heaviest snow likely between early Wednesday morning and Wednesday afternoon. Icing potential may develop during the same timeframe before conditions gradually taper Wednesday night into early Thursday.
Communities including Gaylord, Alpena, Petoskey and Sault Ste. Marie could see travel impacts, especially during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses may become icy first.
Drivers are urged to monitor forecasts and prepare for changing road conditions. The mixed precipitation could affect school schedules, commercial transport and regional air travel.
