Traverse City, Michigan – Northern Michigan residents should bundle up tonight as clear skies and calm winds send temperatures plunging into the low 40s across inland and low-lying areas—some of the coolest summer readings in weeks.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, Thursday night lows will range from 42 to 53 degrees, with the coldest pockets away from the lakeshore. While the chill is temporary, the region remains dry through the weekend as highs steadily rise into the 80s by Sunday. Skies will turn hazy by Saturday as wildfire smoke drifts in from western Canada.

Communities like Petoskey, Alpena, and Cadillac can expect crisp mornings followed by warmer afternoons. Along the lakeshore—such as Ludington and Charlevoix—overnight lows will be milder, but haze may impact air quality, especially for sensitive groups. Residents with asthma or respiratory concerns should limit outdoor activity during hazy periods.

This weekend marks the start of a gradual August warmup, but no rain is in the forecast through at least Sunday. Stay updated as conditions may shift with incoming wildfire smoke and shifting winds.
