Gaylord, Mich. – Strong to severe storms could sweep through eastern Lower Michigan Saturday afternoon, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and heavy downpours from Alpena to Gladwin.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the most dangerous weather is expected between early afternoon and evening on July 12, particularly east of U.S. Route 131. A Level 2 severe weather risk has been issued, with redevelopment most likely after morning showers move out. Locations under threat include Alpena, Mio, Roscommon, and Tawas City.
Embedded thunderstorms may begin earlier in the day, but forecasters remain uncertain if lingering morning activity will suppress afternoon intensity. Either way, residents in counties like Iosco, Alcona, and Arenac should monitor updates closely and be prepared for fast-changing conditions.
If warnings are issued, avoid non-essential travel, secure outdoor items, and charge electronics. Winds could exceed 60 mph in stronger cells, especially near the Saginaw Bay region.
Storm chances linger through Saturday night, with the next update expected early Saturday morning. Stay tuned to weather.gov/gaylord for the latest alerts.
