Gaylord, MI – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for parts of northern Michigan, where lake effect snow is expected to bring 1 to 3 inches of accumulation and slippery road conditions through 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Gaylord.
The advisory covers Manistee County and Western Chippewa County, where snow showers and gusty winds will make travel difficult at times Monday evening. For Chippewa County, the advisory begins at 7 p.m. and continues until 1 a.m. Tuesday, while Manistee County remains under the ongoing advisory issued earlier Monday afternoon.
Forecasters caution that lake effect snow bands can shift quickly, creating rapid changes in visibility and road conditions across short distances. Motorists are urged to slow down and allow extra travel time during the evening commute.
The NWS emphasizes that travel conditions may vary from heavy snow in one area to clear skies just a few miles away—a hallmark of lake effect systems fueled by cold air moving over Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.
Drivers can check the latest Michigan road conditions by calling 511 or visiting MDOT’s online traffic map before heading out.
