Grand Traverse County, MI – Drivers in northern Michigan are being urged to use caution after several stop signs were found knocked down or missing this week in Grand Traverse and Wexford Counties.

According to the Grand Traverse County Road Commission, at least 10 stop signs were discovered damaged or removed as of Wednesday, September 24, with seven in Wexford County and three in Grand Traverse County. Authorities say it is not yet clear whether the incidents are connected or intentional.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing and asked residents to report any knowledge of individuals allegedly running over, damaging, or stealing stop signs. Tips can be directed to the Sheriff’s Office at 231-995-5012.

Officials warned that removing traffic control devices creates an extreme public safety hazard. “If you witness someone involved in this type of activity, contact 911 immediately,” the department stated, urging residents to provide as many details as possible to emergency dispatchers.

Sheriff Michael Shea emphasized that tampering with roadway signs can lead to serious crashes and carries potential felony charges. Investigators are also working to determine whether the three Grand Traverse County incidents are linked to those reported in Wexford County.

Residents are encouraged to drive carefully and report suspicious activity as crews work to replace the missing signs.
