Gaylord, MI – A powerful ice storm is set to sweep across Northern Michigan Friday evening, threatening travel and power infrastructure across Chippewa and Mackinac counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, an Ice Storm Warning is in effect from 5 p.m. Friday to 11 a.m. Saturday, with ice accumulations between two-tenths and four-tenths of an inch expected. Light snow and sleet, totaling up to one inch, may also accompany the storm.

The storm will primarily impact Western, Central, and Southeast Chippewa, along with Western and Eastern Mackinac Counties, including Mackinac Island and Bois Blanc Island. Forecasters warn of slick and hazardous conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses. The weight of accumulated ice may snap tree limbs and down power lines, possibly leading to widespread and long-lasting power outages.

Motorists are urged to avoid travel during the warning period. Authorities recommend keeping emergency supplies—such as flashlights, food, and water—in vehicles if travel is absolutely necessary.

Residents should prepare now for potential disruptions and avoid touching any downed power lines. Power outages should be reported directly to local utility providers.
