Gaylord, Mich. – A chilly wake-up greeted parts of Northern Michigan Monday as patchy frost developed across inland valleys, especially near and south of M-72. Drivers on rural roads faced frosted windshields and slick surfaces in low-lying areas before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the frost risk will fade quickly by mid-morning, giving way to sunshine and calmer conditions. While Monday morning started near 39 degrees, daytime highs will climb into the mid-60s, with warmer afternoons arriving through the rest of the week.

Tuesday marks the start of a steady warming trend, with Gaylord, Traverse City, and Alpena expected to reach the low to mid-70s under mostly sunny skies. Winds remain light, making for safe travel and pleasant conditions for outdoor work or school commutes. Overnight lows, however, will stay cool, ranging from the upper 40s to low 50s, so residents should continue protecting late-season gardens and sensitive plants.

By midweek, Northern Michigan will settle into a stretch of fair weather. Wednesday and Thursday both bring highs in the low 70s with bright sunshine, although some patchy clouds may return at night. A slight chance of showers could arrive late Friday into Saturday, but widespread rain is not expected.

Residents should prepare for cool mornings followed by seasonable afternoons, perfect for early September activities. No hazardous weather is forecast after Monday’s frost.
