Gaylord, Mich. – Beachgoers in northern Michigan face dangerous swimming conditions today, with rip currents expected to peak by this afternoon. Officials warn against entering Lake Michigan waters until late evening, as waves of three to five feet create a high risk of life-threatening currents.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the high swim risk remains in effect from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday along several northwest Michigan beaches. Conditions are especially hazardous for unprotected swimmers, including areas near Sleeping Bear Dunes, Leelanau, and Benzie County shorelines. Drivers heading to beach towns along US-31 should expect increased caution advisories near public lake access points.

The good news for residents inland is that skies will remain dry, and a stretch of calm, sunny weather builds by midweek. Wednesday brings mostly sunny skies to Gaylord with highs in the lower 70s. Winds shift lighter, with a north breeze calming through the evening. This shift will ease water conditions on Lake Michigan by Wednesday morning.

Communities across Otsego, Antrim, and Emmet counties should prepare for several pleasant fall-like days ahead. Thursday and Friday look warm and dry, with highs in the mid-70s. The next chance of showers doesn’t arrive until Saturday morning, and even then, rainfall totals appear light.

For Tuesday, the priority remains water safety. Avoid swimming at unguarded beaches, stay away from piers, and monitor updates from local emergency officials.

Warnings expire tonight, but additional alerts could follow if lake winds strengthen again later this week.
