Gaylord, MI – Heavy lake-effect snow continues to blanket northern Michigan, prompting the National Weather Service to extend its Winter Storm Warning for multiple counties until 7 p.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, areas affected include Western Chippewa and Mackinac Counties in the Upper Peninsula, as well as Leelanau, Antrim, Otsego, and surrounding counties in the Lower Peninsula. Expected snowfall ranges between 4 and 7 inches, with winds gusting up to 40 mph creating whiteout conditions and hazardous travel.
The storm is already causing slick roads, drifting snow, and significantly reduced visibility. Officials warn of potentially life-threatening conditions during the morning and evening commutes. Sporadic power outages are also possible due to the weight of snow on tree limbs and strong winds.
Residents are urged to delay travel unless absolutely necessary. Those who must venture out are advised to carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water.
The warning remains in effect until this evening, with conditions expected to ease as winds diminish overnight. Motorists are encouraged to check road conditions before traveling and to proceed with extreme caution.
