Gaylord, Michigan – A sharp cold front moving through Northern Michigan will trigger a rain-to-snow transition Thursday afternoon, with temperatures falling fast enough to create slushy and potentially icy road conditions by the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a wintry mix is expected to develop during the day Thursday as temperatures range from 33 to 51 degrees before colder air rapidly moves in overnight. By Friday morning, highs will struggle between 22 and 36 degrees, signaling a return to winter-like conditions.

Communities including Gaylord, Petoskey, Traverse City, and Alpena could see wet roads turn slick as temperatures drop below freezing late Thursday night. Bridges and overpasses along I-75 and US-131 are especially vulnerable to refreezing. Light snow chances continue into Friday and Saturday, with daytime highs remaining below seasonal averages.

Residents should prepare for changing road conditions within a short time window Thursday evening. MDOT advises reducing speeds and allowing extra stopping distance, especially on untreated roads. Keeping winter gear in vehicles remains important as colder air settles in.

Conditions begin to moderate slightly by Sunday, with highs rebounding into the upper 30s to mid-50s, but additional light precipitation chances linger into the weekend.
