Caribou, Maine – Roads across northern Maine could turn slick within hours tonight as a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain spreads into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for northern and eastern Aroostook County from this evening through Friday afternoon, while surrounding areas including northern Somerset, Piscataquis, Penobscot, Hancock, and Washington counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory. Precipitation is expected to begin late tonight, with the heaviest impacts arriving overnight into the Friday morning commute.
Snow will quickly transition to sleet and freezing rain, creating icy road conditions and hazardous travel, especially in areas like Presque Isle, Caribou, and Houlton. Ice accumulation could lead to slippery surfaces on untreated roads, sidewalks, and bridges, while periods of snow may reduce visibility.
Farther south toward Bangor and Bar Harbor, a mix of rain and snow is expected, but freezing rain could still create localized travel issues early Friday.
Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel overnight, allow extra time Friday morning, and keep emergency supplies in vehicles. Conditions are expected to improve gradually by Friday afternoon, but additional advisories may be issued as the storm evolves.
