Caribou, ME – Northern Maine residents are waking up to slick and icy roads Monday morning as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. EST, according to the National Weather Service in Caribou.
The advisory covers Aroostook, Somerset, and Piscataquis counties, including communities such as Caribou, Fort Kent, Presque Isle, Ashland, and Baxter State Park. Forecasters say light snow and freezing rain will continue through the early morning hours, producing up to one inch of snow and a thin glaze of ice on roads and sidewalks.
The National Weather Service cautions that even minor ice accumulations can make travel hazardous, especially on untreated surfaces. Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution on bridges and elevated roadways that may freeze first.
The highest snow totals are expected across the North Woods, where temperatures have remained below freezing overnight. Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunrise as temperatures rise and precipitation tapers off.
Residents are also advised to take care when walking outdoors—stairs, sidewalks, and driveways may be slippery due to thin ice, increasing the risk of falls and injuries.
