Caribou, Maine – A developing winter storm could create icy, hazardous travel conditions across parts of Maine by Tuesday night, with freezing rain posing the greatest immediate concern.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, confidence is increasing that a storm system will impact the state Tuesday into Wednesday, though the exact track remains uncertain. That uncertainty will determine where a narrow corridor of freezing rain sets up, with northern and central Maine most at risk for ice accumulation exceeding 0.10 inches.

Communities including Caribou, Presque Isle, and Houlton could see slick roads and icy surfaces develop overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday. Even a light glaze of ice may create dangerous travel on routes like U.S. 1 and I-95, especially on untreated roads and bridges.

Farther south and along the coast, including Bangor and Bar Harbor, precipitation is more likely to fall as rain, reducing icing concerns but still creating wet and reduced-visibility conditions.

There is also potential for accumulating snow later in the week as colder air returns behind the system.

Residents should prepare for rapidly changing road conditions Tuesday night and monitor updates as the storm track becomes clearer. Additional advisories and possible winter weather alerts are expected.
